The following descriptions of what to expect apply to all types of accommodation. Use them as a general guide to what you can expect. AA and RAC ratings are essentially equivalent to Visit Britain in terms of standards.

Guest Accommodation (1-5 stars)

Includes the categories Guest Accommodation, Bed & Breakfast, Guest House, Farmhouse, Inn, Restaurant with Rooms.

Self Catering (1-5 stars)

Includes the categories Self Catering, Serviced Apartments, Approved Caravan Holiday Home

1 star
1 Star: Simple, practical, no frills.
2 stars
2 Star: Well presented and well run.
3 stars
3 Star: Good level of quality and comfort.
4 stars
4 Star: Excellent standard throughout.
5 stars
5 Star: Exceptional with a degree of luxury.

Gold and Silver Awards

Gold and silver awards are given to hotels and guest accommodation that provide exceptional quality in all areas but in particular in service and hospitality.

Since 2009 both Gold and Silver awards have also been given to qualifying self catering accommodation.

Welcome Awards

Look out for the 'Welcome' awards indicating that these accommodations are particlarly welcoming to cyclists, walkers, families or pets.

Green Tourism Awards

Some providers have been also awarded specific certification for their environmental approach to sustainable tourism.

National Accessible Scheme

Some accommodations on this site have been assessed and awarded mobility ratings. The following symbols are used to indicate suitability.

M1 accessibility logo
Mobility 1: Typically suitable for a person with sufficient mobility to climb a flight of steps but would benefit from fixtures and fittings to aid balance.
M2 accessibility logo
Mobility 2: Typically suitable for a person with restricted walking ability and for those who may need to use a wheelchair some of the time.
M3 accessibility logo
Mobility 3: Typically suitable for a person who depends on the use of a wheelchair and transfers unaided to and from a wheelchair in a seated position.
M4 accessibility logo
Mobility 4: Typically suitable for a person who depends on the use of a wheelchair and transfers to and from the wheelchair in a seated position. They also require personal /. mechanical assistance to aid transfer e.g. carer or hoist.
