The house, part Georgian, part Elizabethan, set among the antique shops in the old quarter of Barnard Castle, has a chequered history: a hatter's shop whose owner wasn't mad but ended up in Durham Jail, a pub that the locals nicknamed 'The Bucket of Blood' and, until recently, an antique shop.

The rooms are full of antiques, books and little touches. The bedrooms offer TVs, bathrobes, decanters of sherry and the opportunity to switch off.
